Andriy Volodymyrovych Parubiy (January 31, 1971 – August 30, 2025) was a prominent Ukrainian politician, nationalist leader, and key figure in the country's pro-European movements.[1][2] Born in Chervonohrad in western Ukraine, he entered politics in the late 1980s as a nationalist aligned with the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), maintaining graves of OUN members and participating in anti-Communist rallies, for which he was briefly imprisoned in 1989.[3] In the early 1990s, he co-founded the far-right Social-National Party of Ukraine, which evolved into the nationalist Svoboda party, before shifting to mainstream politics in 2005 by joining President Viktor Yushchenko's Our Ukraine party.[3] Parubiy gained prominence during Ukraine's revolutions, organizing tent camps in Kyiv for the 2004 Orange Revolution and leading self-defense forces during the 2013-2014 Euromaidan protests, which ousted pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych.[2][3][6] Following Euromaidan, he served briefly as Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council from February to August 2014, coordinating responses to Russia-backed separatist uprisings in eastern Ukraine and seeking NATO assistance.[1][2][3] Elected to the Verkhovna Rada in 2014 with the People's Front party, he became First Deputy Chairman in December 2014 and Chairman (Speaker) from April 2016 to August 2019, the third-highest state office.[1][2][3] In this role, he advanced parliamentary reforms, including establishing a reform office in 2019, and advocated for Ukraine's European integration and national identity.[2][5] Parubiy, a Greek Catholic married with one daughter, remained a symbol of Ukrainian resilience post-parliament.[2][4] On August 30, 2025, the 54-year-old was fatally shot in broad daylight in Lviv by a gunman who fled on an electric bike; suspect Mykhailo Stselnikov, 52, was arrested two days later in Khmelnytskyi Oblast.[1][5] The assassination drew widespread condemnation from leaders like President Volodymyr Zelensky and tributes highlighting his defense of sovereignty.[4][5]
